Above & Below Water Slimline Scene Card

Hello and welcome to the Rabbit Hole Designs blog; it's Rick back with you again today and I am sharing a slimline scene card that will take you both above the water surface and below. This was actually very easy to create it was a mater of putting the elements in the right place and changing the tones and values of the ink blending from the sky and underneath the water.

Above & Below Under Water Slimline Scene Card:

My above and below under water slimline scene card features the High Tide Stamp Set, the High Tide Dies, the Salty Air Stamp Set and the Salty Air Dies all part of the Mer-May Release from the Rabbit Hole Designs that just came out on May 6th. I also featured my new watercolor pencils to color the images from both stamp sets.  

Watercolor Pencils Coloring:

I stamped all my images out of a couple sheets of watercolor paper that I have cut down to 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" in Versafine Clair Nocturne Ink to start out. I then heat set the ink because I didn't want to wait for it to dry before I started coloring with my watercolor pencils. Once I had the Versafine Clair Nocturne Ink dried I was ready to color up my sweet little mermaids, seaweed, fishes, rocks, and the other images from both stamp sets. 

When I color with my watercolor pencils I treat them like regular colored pencils to start with. I lay down my lightest color first and then add layers of darker tones on top of the lighter where I want the stamped images to be the darkest. Once I have all the images colored I start adding a very small amount of water with a thirsty brush (meaning I have dipped the watercolor brush into a cup of water and placed the hairs of the brushes on a paper towel to soak up most of the water). I then let that layer of color dry completely and I come back and add a second and sometimes a third or fourth layer of the same colors in the same areas to build up the colors and repeat the process of moistening the pigment and moving it around. Once I had all the images colored i cut them out with their matching dies.  

Ink Blending the Background Panels:

At this point I took a piece of Bristol Smooth Cardstock and created a gradient ink blended background in different shades of teals and blue oxide inks using my CottonTail Blending Brushes. While my background panel I also created a panel of bristol smooth cardstock ink blended with brown shades of  oxide inks.  I then cut three hill shapes to attach to may slimline card when I got ready to assemble. But before I did that I used same blues and teals oxide ink to create a coordinating mat layer for my card front.  

Putting Everything Together:

Once I had my ink blending completed I attached my card front onto my blue & teal mat layer. I then attached the different hill die cuts to the card front adding the two closest layers with different thicknesses of foam adhesive and the one in the background with liquid adhesive. At this point I could do the same thing with my mermaids and the other stamped and die cut elements from the Salty Air Stamp Set and the High Tide Stamp Set. Once I had the images attached I stamped my sentiment from the High Tide Stamp Set in Versafine Clair Nocturne Ink in the top right corner by the lighthouse.

  

Creating a Top Folding Slimline Card Base:

Once all my images were attached to my card front and the sentiment was stamped I could add the slimline card front to my top folding slimline card base. Which requires two pieces of white ultra thick cardstock. One is cut at 3 1/2" x 8 1/2" and the second one was cut at 3 1/2" x 9 1/2" and scored at the 1" mark. You are going to fold and score the 1" score line down and attach it to the back of the 3 1/2" x 8 1/2" piece to create a top folding slimline card base. Once I everything attached I added a little glitter to the mermaids tails, the fish, as well as the small elements on each mermaid. I also added a little to their hair as well to act as little highlights. I also added a few gel pen highlights on the water surface to add a little visual space to separate the surface from the underwater scene.
